A Saviour For Some, Not For Others – The Spell Checker

Not checking the spelling and grammar when we write a letter, article or even putting a CV together is something we all do, and something we usually regret afterwards. It happens too frequently, and unfortunately for me and many other recruiters, people who send in their CV do not check thoroughly for such errors

We’re All In This Together – We Or I ?

Speaking to other recruiters and indeed employers, I know I am not alone on this. Candidates constantly talk about what their job entails by using the phrase ‘we’ instead of ‘I’ during conversation. I know that a lot of what people do is a team effort, and not everyone wants to take the limelight themselves, but as an interview is the very platform where you should be selling yourself and your skills, only 10% of people I meet or less actually consciously use the ‘I’ word instead of ‘we’.

7 Tips To Stay Motivated During Your Job Search

If there is one common theme I hear from candidates when they are looking for a new role, it is that everyone has both high and low moments, and central to all of this is keeping yourself motivated. Job hunting can be a lonely place a lot of the time, because under most circumstances the fewer people you tell the better. I have met candidates at both ends of the motivation spectrum over the years – people very low because they are unemployed and have been out of work for 6 months or more; and people who are employed, determined to move onwards and upwards with bags of energy, verging on overdrive.

The devil is in the Detail

Unlike the infamous saying, this post focuses on the positive context of detail, and how adding more information into your CV is the right thing to do, not the wrong thing. As a recruiter, I can receive up to 60 applications to just one job advert in the current climate. The CVs that grab my attention are the one or two page variety that tell me more about an individuals personal interests than work experience, and the longer detailed CVs that have substance in them. So as you would expect, it is the latter that I really give most attention to.

Bringing back the Personal Touch

As I mentioned in my last post, the recruitment process today is unfortunately not just face-to-face meetings, they can incorporate personality & numerical tests, company specific tests, online case studies etc. As you are not meeting anyone in person to do these, you need to make it count during the interview itself and leave a good impression afterwards. So how can you bring back the personal touch and make it last ?. Very easily and simply in my opinion, both as a candidate if you have an interview, and as an employer once you have found the right person for your job.

Psychometric Testing and the Interview Process

Along with case studies, formal presentations and assessment centres, interview tests are another tool in the box which many employers use to find the best candidate for the job. Psychometric tests which this post focuses on can be divided into two main categories – aptitude & ability testing and personality testing.

Questions ‘not’ to ask during an interview

Last week I talked about not criticising your boss or previous employer in an interview, not lying about your work experience and not being closed or non-engaging with the interviewer amongst others. This blog is very much an extension to that theme, and covers questions you should not ask during an interview (for a list of good questions to ask, see my blog here on the topic). I think this is a great topic to explore further as there is so much content on the internet about what questions are acceptable to ask, and hardly any about what you should not ask. Everyone wants to do well in an interview so they can hopefully secure a job offer at the end of it

Dont do these things during an interview !

There are many things you should NOT do during an interview, and many questions I suggest you do not ask either, just in case what you say or do jeopardises the outcome. The list really is endless, but below I have highlighted some of the more important things you should definately NOT do during an interview. If you can think of any others, or have real life examples we could use, please let me know so that I can add them to the blog, or feel free to post them on our Forum. The more comprehensive this list becomes, the more useful it will be for everyone.
