Stress & The Job Search

Stress is something at the top of many people’s list that I meet, and the overwhelming majority say job hunting is stressful. For many, stress comes with the territory and some people are able to keep it under control reasonably well. For others though, it can be a constant battle and if the meeting I had with a Finance Director last week is anything to go by, it seems many job-seekers are stressed for a whole host of reasons.

Prepare Yourself Like Royalty

What a brilliant event the Royal Wedding was on Friday, the intricate preparation over many months ensured timings on the day were perfect. Reflecting back on the day made me think about job-seekers, and how much more successful individuals could be if they put the same amount of effort and enthusiasm into preparation for their job search.

How To Find Language Jobs

If you are multi-lingual and seeking a role where you can use your foreign languages, there are a whole host of positions you could consider. Like with any job search, it is important that you have all the technical skills required for the job as well as being able to speak the language fluently. Whilst this may seem pretty obvious, you would be surprised by the number of people I speak to that just say they can “get by” in Spanish, French, Germany etc, which isn’t sufficient. I believe the litmus test is – if you cannot conduct a face-to-face interview in the language required for the job, then you shouldn’t apply.

Growth In Part-Time Job Opportunities

Part-time workers are a life-line for many UK employers, from the large multi-nationals to the smaller businesses with just a handful of employees. Interestingly, the latest figures (Dec 2010) from the Office of National Statistics in their GDP and Labour Market Report show how important part-time roles are now to the UK economy. Whilst the overall employment market did show resilience in the three months of Q3, in the period Q309 to Q310, it was part-time jobs which showed real growth at over 4% (a total of over 320,000 jobs), against full-time jobs which saw a slight decline of 0.2%.

Traditional Media And The Job Search (Part II)

One of the greatest assets Regional and Local newspapers have for job seekers is they only advertise roles for the geographical area that they represent. Therefore, for those people looking for roles specifically within a county or town, these are an ideal resource to use, as well as the other methods we discuss here at approachthemarket.com. I have provided below a list of the regional and local newspapers for England, and where possible provided links to the online version of the paper which will take you direct to the jobs section. This should save you some time having to search around the whole home page to find the information you require

Traditional Media And The Job Search (Part I)

Years before social media came along and people logged on to Linked-In, Twitter and Facebook, one of the ways to find a new job included reading the Newspapers, both the national and local/regional press. Whilst online advertising is certainly taking the place of print for job adverts, there are still job opportunities advertised in the national and local/regional press which you shouldn’t ignore. Applying to newspaper job adverts alongside other methods of job hunting which we discuss here on Approachthemarket.com means you will cover the whole range of avenues available to find yourself a new role.

Happy New Year: Industries Recruiting

With just over 2 weeks to go until the New Year, one question everyone has been asking me recently is ‘Who is going to be recruiting in 2011 ?’ I have my own thoughts on this topic, but rather than give you my best estimates, I decided to find some studies on the subject, and one of the largest and most recognised comes from Manpower, and their 32 page Employment Outlook Survey.
