Dont Ignore Industry Sector Information

Sometimes it is the little things in life that can have the biggest impact on you, and the same can be true when writing your CV / resume.

Putting a contact number on your CV is a small thing in reality and takes no time at all, but without one (and I have seen many without any at all) it can become a big problem as recruiters or employers cannot get hold of you.  The same goes for leaving off email addresses or not putting on your qualifications.

 

In a similar vein, “Industry Sector” is another area that people generally give little attention to.  It can be damaging for you and recruiters / employers though, as it could mean you are not shortlisted for a role because of it.  Many clients I work with find it more comfortable meeting people who understand their business sector, and like to see candidates from their direct competition or other players in the same industry.  This in itself could push your CV to the top of the pile for an interview, rather than the bottom if the information is not on your CV.

 

On many occasions, there are strict deadlines that recruiters have to meet, and employers want CVs yesterday.  There is no time to go on the internet trying to find out what type of business you work in.  No one reading your CV (apart from you) can know what your current employer ABC Limited does if it is not written down somewhere.  It would be really useful to include one or two sentences about the companies you have worked for, particularly if they are not recognisable names like Vodafone, BP, Shell, Marks & Spencer.

 

If you currently work at manufacturers ABC Limited and two years ago you were with TYZ International, how does the reader know what the businesses do, as they are not instantly recognisable names to me.  This very fact could be very important for a job application though, especially if a manufacturing company only wants to see people with manufacturing experience.  Would they recognise the company names too ?  Don’t expect them too, especially if the companies you have worked for are small and not well known.

 

So what information should you put on your CV to help the reader ?.  Using just one or two sentences, try to include what they do as a business, if they are a UK or global operation and how many locations, names of brands they sell, revenue / turnover figures, employee numbers, and if they are a UK/US listed business (eg FTSE250, NYSE).  Like in a jigsaw puzzle, it will enable the recruiter to piece together all the information about you, in addition to what skills and experience you have.
