How To Find Language Jobs

I was asked a few weeks ago by two candidates of McGinnis Loy if I knew an easy way of finding them Language jobs.  At the time, they were interested in a Language position I was recruiting for, but they didn’t have the specific accounting experience, so they wanted to know if I could help them with other roles.  Whilst both candidates were accountants by profession, they were also keen to use their language skill, but didn’t know where to turn.

If you are multi-lingual and seek a role where you can use your foreign languages, there are a whole host of positions you could consider.  Like with any job search, it is important that you have all the technical skills required for the job, as well as being able to speak the language fluently.  Whilst this may seem pretty obvious, you would be surprised by the number of people I speak to that say they can “get by” in Spanish, French, Germany etc, which isn’t sufficient.  I believe the litmus test should be - if you can’t conduct a face-to-face interview in the language required for the job, then you shouldn’t apply.

There is no point putting on your CV that you speak basic or intermediate Spanish either – how should the person reading your CV interpret  basic or intermediate?.  If employers want to recruit someone for a language job, you need to be fluent in that language.  I am one of millions of people that have GCSEs or A levels in a European language. However, as I’m not fluent, I would not consider applying for a language role.  With the European workforce being so mobile, I know there will be better people with fluent language skills, who will inevitably have better success.

For those who can speak a second or third language fluently, employers generally pay a premium for this skill, so you should use this to your advantage.   As I recruit in the Accounting & Finance field, it is not unusual for employers to pay £1,000-£5,000 more to secure someone with languages, compared to a similar English speaking role.  For those in a specialist profession (eg Law, Accounting, Marketing), the same rules apply, and they also earn a premium wage if they have fluent language skills.

So, how can you find out which employers and recruiters are looking for language speakers?  I would prioritise a Language job search as follows:

  • Make sure you register and upload your CV to specialist Language job boards
  • Speak to and register with a number of specialist Language recruitment agencies
  • Do an advanced search on general job boards for jobs in your chosen language(s)
  • Use social media (Linked-In, Twitter, Facebook) to search for language roles
  • Tell recruitment agencies you are registered with in your profession that you would also consider a Language role if any became available
  • Use Google to search for companies with an International presence – these are most likely to recruit for language skills.  One of the best places to help you with this is my blog post which lists Career Sites Of The UKs FTSE100 Companies
