10 Ways To Investigate Your Next Employer – Sherlock Holmes Style

As many of you know, I try to encourage job seekers to prepare and plan for every eventuality, whether it is preparation for a CV, preparation for researching a company or planning for interviews. I was reading an article a few weeks ago which suggested that at some point in your career, you may well accept a position that seems perfect on the surface, but once you have started and are maybe only months into the role, things start turning very sour. So, is there anything you can do to stop your job turning sour once you have accepted an offer? Well, unless you can resolve mysteries like Miss Marple or Sherlock Holmes there are no guarantees of course, but there are some steps you can take to make sure you have made the right decision in the first place.

80 Of The FTSE100 Company Career Sites

Most FTSE100 Companies have their own career micro-sites now, and I now have updated the list to 80 of the FTSE100, so this will interest anyone who is keen to work in a UK blue-chip company, the majority of whom have highly recognisable brands. Having looked at all 80 companies, many of them offer you the ability to search roles on their website by specific job category, geographical location and job type. As I have mentioned before, I don’t believe you will get the same responsiveness or service that you would from a good relationship-driven recruitment agency, or as diverse a choice of jobs (you are only looking at one company after all), but you should use these sites as part of an all-round planned job search programme. If you are looking for your next role in an International FTSE-listed corporate business, then this list is one of the best places to start your job hunt !

Alongside the other methods of finding a job that we discuss here at Approachthemarket, there are specific ‘Groups’ on Linked-In which are directly aimed at UK job hunters.

Company Research – It’s not that hard, honest

If you happen to secure an interview with a company that is stock-market listed, company research is even easier in my view. I recommend you visit the relevant stock exchange websites as a starting point (eg The London Stock Exchange for UK companies or Nasdaq or NYSE for US ones). There are also more user-friendly company research sites for companies here in the UK such as Digital Look or the Financial Times.
